Schwartz  Rounds

In 1994, Mr. Ken Schwartz was diagnosed with advanced lung cancer. He was only 40, a nonsmoker, a husband to Ellen and father to 2-year-old Ben.

During his 10-month ordeal, Mr. Schwartz came to realize that what matters most during an illness is the human connection between patients and their caregivers. Ken shares his own story in this two minute video.

He wrote movingly about his experience in an article for The Boston Globe Magazine, where he reminds caregivers to stay in the moment with patients and how “the smallest acts of kindness” make “the unbearable bearable.”

At the end of his life, Mr. Schwartz outlined the organization he wanted to create. It would be a center that would nurture the compassion in healthcare, encouraging the sorts of caregiver-patient relationships that made all the difference to him. He founded the Schwartz Center in 1995, just days before his death on September 10th, to ensure that all patients receive compassionate and humane care.

This one-minute video and this blog post describe the rounds.

Since 2016, the Somerset campus has been a Schwartz Center member. The rounds are informal sessions, open to all RWJ Somerset employees, affiliated clinicians, trainees, and other authorized personnel.

Each rounds, regardless of the topic, is an End-of-Life CME Eligible Event. RWJUH Somerset designates this live activity for a maximum of 1.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. RWJUH Somerset is accredited by the Medical Society of New Jersey.
